While Disney Plus has plenty of non-franchise titles in its library, nothing gets people talking quite like a new entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and that's what we have this month.

Secret Invasion brings Samuel L Jackson's Nick Fury back to the frontline after some time away, as he uncovers a plot by the shapeshifting Skrulls to cause instability around the world.

The show is off to a somewhat slow-paced start, but critics and fans have appreciated the more grounded and serious tone, which is in stark contrast to the sillier, cosmic stories that have come to define Marvel lately.

If comic books aren't your thing, consider trying out Station 19. The Grey's Anatomy spin-off following the Seattle Fire Department recently concluded its sixth season, with a seventh confirmed to be on the way.

Police procedural drama Will Trent, based on Karin Slaughter's best-selling novel, has also been renewed for season 2, proving to be the kind of easy-to-watch yet compelling adaptation fans have been waiting for.

If you're a fan of searing dramas based on true stories then look no further than A Small Light, the National Geographic series telling the story of Miep Gies, a young woman who helped to hide Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis during World War II.

Or for something the whole family can enjoy, check out action-comedy series American Born Chinese, which follows average teen Jin Wang as he gets entangled in a battle between mythological gods.

Other hits from last year that remain available include How I Met Your Mother spin-off How I Met Your Father and workplace mockumentary Abbott Elementary.

There is also a variety of brilliant acquired shows that fans might not be aware are now on Disney Plus, like British favourites It's a Sin, Years and Years, and The Missing.

For now, if you're not sure where to start, here are some of the best titles on Disney Plus for you to dig into right away, including releases on Star.

    Summary:

Three strangers - who live in the same New York City apartment building and share an obsession with true crime - suddenly find themselves embroiled in a murder.

Why watch Only Murders in the Building?:

Pairing the comedy duo Steve Martin and Martin Short with Selena Gomez might have seemed like a strange move when this mystery-comedy was first announced, but it has proven to be a work of genius. The series has taken the world by storm, receiving critical acclaim and becoming a part of a recent raft of new-wave approaches to the crime genre, alongside big-screen efforts like Knives Out.

Now in its second season, the show features our gang of amateur detectives being implicated in a homicide themselves and becoming part of a rival podcast’s investigation. It makes for a somewhat more complex plot, but the series retains its sharp wit and effortless charm and the mystery remains fully engaging.

    Why watch Welcome to Chippendales?:

Disney Plus really are bringing the true-crime drama content in droves recently and we’re not complaining. This new series stars Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, Eternals) as Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the founder of the male strip joint and touring dance troupe Chippendales.
It was America’s first male strip club and while Welcome to Chippendales may sound like an unlikely tale reminiscent of Magic Mike, it’s actually a real-life tale of deceit, financial straits, lawsuits and hitmen. Where you think this tale will go, it almost definitely does not.

    Summary:

Drama series following a busy family from Manchester with their lives converging on one crucial night in 2019.

    Why watch Years and Years?:

With Russell T Davies’s new era of Doctor Who set to stream internationally on Disney Plus, it makes sense that one of his boldest dramas in recent years should also arrive on the platform. As the world descends into populism, war and crisis, we also see how technological innovation and social change transforms their lives and the UK at large.

It’s a decidedly shocking, eerie drama, exploring the darkest timeline with just a glimmer of hope to light the way. It packs a powerful punch, and is sure to stay with you long after you have finished watching.

    Summary:

Comedy with Donald Glover. He plays Earnest Marks, a college dropout who hopes to redeem himself by managing the career of his cousin, the up-and-coming rapper Alfred "Paper Boi" Miles.

    Why watch Atlanta?:

Donald Glover’s surreal comedy masterpiece has now finished airing, with all four seasons available on Disney Plus for UK viewers to watch. It follows Earn (Glover), who manages his cousin Alfred AKA Paper Boi’s (Brian Tyree Henry) rap career, as well as their friend Darius (LaKeith Stanfield) and Earn’s ex-girlfriend Van (Zazie Beetz).

If you’re looking for traditional story structure and arcs, this isn’t it – Atlanta frequently rips up its own rule-book, especially in season 3 which featured multiple episodes without any of the main cast. This may be the aspect of the show that keeps you on your toes, but it’s the biting humour and cutting social commentary which will keep you coming back for more.

    Summary:

American medical drama following the tangled lives of interns, residents and their mentors at a fictional Seattle hospital. The title is a reference to Henry Gray's medical textbook Gray's Anatomy and main character Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). It begins with Meredith, Alex (Justin Chambers), George (TR Knight), Izzie (Katherine Heigl) and Cristina (Sandra Oh) as interns in a surgical programme run by chief of surgery Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr). They are initially mentored by general surgeon Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and work closely with attending neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) and cardiothoracic surgeon Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington). "Grey's Anatomy" premiered in 2005. It led to spin-off series "Private Practice".

    Why watch Grey's Anatomy?:

The longevity of Shonda Rhimes’s Seattle-set surgical drama is something of a medical miracle in TV terms. It launched 17 years ago and has been running for 402 episodes, all of which can now be found on Disney+ along with the newest season, which sees five new interns joining the staff at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. The show’s longevity means it’s the US equivalent of Casualty, which makes Dr Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) their version of dear old Charlie Fairhead. One imagines she’d be flattered by such a comparison.
