On the Rocks

Reteaming with her Lost in Translation star Bill Murray, director Sofia Coppola also gets Rashida Jones on board for this affable dramedy dealing with marital fatigue and daddy issues. Mother-of-two-Laura (Jones) has a pretty great life, but she's suffering from writer's block. To make matters worse, her marital insecurities begin to play up when husband Dean (Marlon Wayans) starts racking up the late nights and business trips. After Laura shares her concerns with Felix (Murray), her womanising father, the pair embark on a clandestine investigation across New York to find out what Dean is up to. While the film certainly has its charms - Murray is on lovable and charismatic form, while Jones steps into familiar, self-deprecating territory - the story doesn't spark as much joy as Coppola's previous efforts. The plot is a little half-baked, the narrative flimsy and the ending somewhat unfulfilling. On the Rocks is a Coke Zero of a Coppola movie; still sweet, but stripped of the darker elements that make it a Classic.
