Review

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

This adaptation of the West End smash never puts its red glitter stiletto heel wrong. Smartly opened up into evocative Sheffield locations by stage director/choreographer Jonathan Butterell, this is a mirrorball blitz of grim-up-north grit and big-hearted emotion. Newcomer Max Harwood gives an impressive performance as 16-year-old Jamie, whose dream is to go to his prom in drag-queen dress. Richard E Grant gives a fantastic turn as Jamie's world-weary mentor Loco Chanelle, while Sarah Lancashire provides the soul-searching as his single mum. A fabulous score blends upbeat pop with brooding ballads, augmented by new song This Was Me, which accompanies a tremendously moving tribute to gay rights and Aids issues. With its story of fighting prejudice against the odds, this is a celebratory feel-good delight of razzle-dazzle dance and sparkling performances.
