Shotgun Wedding

This ungainly mash-up of romcom and action movie is low on thrills, laughs and charm. Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel play the couple whose wedding gathering in the Philippines is beset by family tensions and the arrival of Lopez's showboating former lover (Lenny Kravitz). Matters worsen when masked mercenaries kidnap the guests, leaving Lopez and Duhamel to take up arms and defend themselves. Proceedings are lifted somewhat by co-stars Callie Hernandez, Jennifer Coolidge and D'Arcy Carden, but their comic energies are soon stifled as the captives are confined at gunpoint to a swimming pool. The focus then alights squarely on Lopez and Duhamel, but their lack of chemistry does little to elevate the deadening dialogue. While the shift to tooled-up mayhem seems to promise blood-soaked fun, Pitch Perfect director Jason Moore's emphasis on heightened chaos over coherence soon grates. Some predictable twists and poorly executed action set pieces later, only the impression of an opportunity missed lingers.
