Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Director George C Wolfe's compelling civil rights biopic stars Colman Domingo as activist Bayard Rustin, a key figure and motivational force behind the landmark March on Washington in 1963. Rustin is depicted as a charismatic, driven man whose ongoing battle against the resistance of high-ranking white politicians risks being undermined by internal conflict between the protest groups involved in the march. Wolfe's absorbing film redresses the balance of some accounts that reduce Rustin's role to that of a mid-level foot soldier for Martin Luther King's vision, and shines a light on the struggles faced by clandestine gay men of the time. The visual flair and convincing period detail is matched by Domingo's towering portrayal, with every line of dialogue delivered like a call to arms. The supporting cast - including Chris Rock, Jeffrey Wright and CCH Pounder - impresses across the board.
