A star rating of 3 out of 5.

A droll classroom lizard hands out pithy advice to young students in this scattershot but life-affirming animated comedy. After spending 74 years in a tank, pet lizard Leo (voiced by Adam Sandler) realises he is almost too old to go on adventures and determines to make one last break for freedom. However, his plans are thwarted by the pupils who take him home each weekend. After he accidentally reveals that he can talk, Leo forms a bond with the kids, giving them advice about growing up - but events take a turn when the secret gets out. Co-written by Sandler, the film is a wacky stew of energetic high jinks, musical interludes, fun visual gags, and life lessons delivered with a cheeky eye-roll. It all just about hangs together thanks to Sandler's likeable character, whose approach to teaching is amusingly matter-of-fact. Bill Burr puts in a delightfully exasperated turn as Squirtle, Leo's turtle pal, while Sandler's daughters Sunny and Sadie voice two of the kids Leo befriends. It takes a while to get going, but Leo soon picks up once the zany reptile is let off the leash.
