The British Open is hosted in Cheltenham in 2023 as Ryan Day aims to defend his title following a remarkable triumph over Mark Allen last year.

A random draw – similar to competitions such as the FA Cup – will be staged after each round, providing a mixed range of matches throughout the competition.

The usual cast of stellar snooker players will return to the table this week as they battle for supremacy in the fledgling campaign, though there is one major absentee.

Ronnie O'Sullivan clinched an 11-9 victory over world champion Luca Brecel in the Shanghai Masters final – a pulsating sign of things to come over the course of the calendar, but withdrew ahead of the tournament here.
